Lions split weekend at Wilmington

Wilmington, Ohio – Over the weekend, your Mount St. Joseph Women's volleyball team was on the road for a double header at Wilmington College. The Lions first matchup would be against Mount Union University as they dropped the match in 5 sets. The second match of the day would be against the host Wilmington college as they Lions pulled away late to earn the 3 sets to 1 victory.
 
MATCH ONE: MSJ – 2        Mount Union – 3
In the first match of the day, the Lions jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead due to a trio of lions earning kills. The purple raiders of Mount Union would find a way to fight back into the match as the score found itself tied at 14. The match would continue a steady back and forth run before senior Sam Buschur put together a service run that included 2 aces to finish to first set in favor of the Lions 25-18. In the second set the purple raiders were the ones who would jump out fast. The Lions put together a late push but it would not be enough as Mount Union took the second set 25-22. In set three the Lions once again would be slow to start putting themselves in a hole. The Lions would take advantage of the Purple Raiders hitting error and add 12 kills of their own to finish the third set victory 25-21. Unfortunately for the Mount, the Lions were unable to finish the match off as the Purple Raiders would steal set 4 and 5 and the Mount would drop the match 3 sets to 2.
 
MATCH TWO: MSJ – 3            Wilmington – 1
In the second match of the day, the Lions would go up against the hosting Wilmington Quakers. In the first set, The Lions found themselves trailing 21-17 late in the set. After a pair of kills by Junior Addie Conley and a few hitting errors by the Quakers, the Lions pulled away with a 25-23 win in set one. Like most of the afternoon, the second set of action was a back-and-forth battle between the Quakers and Lions. The Quakers though would be the ones to come out on top late for a 25-22 victory. Set 3 was another slow start for the Lions as they would trail 15-6. The Lions would rally back to a 22-17 deficit as Senior Brooke Aselage and Junior Grace Young would earn 7 kills in the final 8 points for an 8-0 and a 25-22 win in set 3. In the fourth and final set of the day the Lions would take advantage of 3 service aces from Young and a team 11 kills for a 25-19 win. The Lions would defeat the Quakers 3 sets to 1 and the win would be their 20th on the season.
 
Grace Young would lead the Lions on the weekend with 24 kills, 11 blocks, and also an impressive 4 service aces. Brooke Aselage would also have a respectable 22 kills while adding 27 digs. Libero Erin Androne would lead the Lions in digs over the weekend with a total of 48.
 
UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions will be back in action on Wednesday, October 26th as they travel to Lexington, Kentucky to take on the Transylvania Pioneers for first place in the HCAC. The match is set to begin at 7pm.
