Lions Prevail in HCAC Home Opener Defeating Bluffton 2-0

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Wednesday, October 5th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Beavers of Bluffton to Schueler Field for the Lions HCAC home opener. The Mount scored once in each half while Freshman Alyse Harris recorded her 3rd straight shutout taking down the Beavers 2-0.

The Lions were dominant to start play. The Lions controlled possession for the majority of the first half and finally found the net with just under 2 minutes remaining in the half. Following a foul, Sophomore Vivian Willis stepped to take the free kick along the far sideline from about 48 yards out from the net. Willis whipped a looping cross into the box past the diving goalkeeper and to the head of Freshman Rose Barnes. Barnes would head a pass to Senior Julia Herzog who would crush the ball into the open net giving the Lions a 1-0 advantage just before halftime. The Lions dominated the first 45 minutes shooting 12 shots to Bluffton's 1.

In the second half of play the Lions again provided the offensive pressure. McKenzie Schneeman and Catherine Hatfield got the half started with a pair of shots but Bluffton's Brielle Collier made a pair of crucial saves. But, the Lions weren't done yet. In the 72nd minute McKenzie Schneeman lined up to take a corner kick from the near corner. Schneeman looped in a cross ricocheting off a Bluffton defender and straight to Sophomore Haley Trittschuh. Trittschuh gathered and hammered the ball to the top left corner flying past the keeper and giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Following the goal,The Mount took a more defensive approach. Defenders Molly Sheridan, Vivian Willis, Zoe Sanford and Holly Knippenberg stood tall for the Lions alongside Freshman goalkeeper Alyse Harris. For the final 18 minutes of the contest the Beavers were held in check. After 90 minutes of play the Lions remain unbeaten in HCAC play defeating Bluffton 2-0.
