FRANKLIN, Ind. - On Friday, October 7th, your Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Franklin College to take on the Grizzlies in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference battle. Each squad battled offensively in a high scoring affair. The Grizzlies got ahead early jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. But, the Lions would answer with a goal just before halftime and another in the 62nd minute. The Grizzlies were able to hold off The Mount scoring their 4th goal in the 80th minute defeating the Lions 4-2.
In the first half Franklin got moving quickly offensively. The Grizzlies pushed across goals in the 23rd, 27th and 41st minutes to give them a 3-0 advantage. But, just before the half the Lions would get one of their own. Junior
Luis Martinez Velez stepped to take a free kick along the far sideline from about 39 yards out from the goal. Velez sent a ball flying into the box as Freshman
Brandon Vadnais made a spectacular play, spinning in mid-air while striking the ball with the heel of his left foot. The ball then snuck past the keeper and into the net to trim the Franklin lead to 3-1 heading into halftime.
To begin the second half the Lions defense held strong fighting off 8 Franklin shots in the first 15 minutes of play. After a foul on
Michael Abel in the box, the Lions offense would get another chance to trim the Franklin lead with a penalty kick.
Willis Johnson stepped to the spot to take the kick slipping it past the goalkeeper trimming the Franklin lead again to 3-2.
But, Franklin answered back in the 80th minute giving them a 4-2 advantage with 10 minutes remaining. The Lions were able to get a pair of shots off following the goal but both were saved by the Grizzlies' goalkeeper as The Mount fell to Franklin 4-2.
