Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lions finish 1-1 at Lauren Hill Tip-off Classic

Cincinnati, Ohio – Last weekend your Mount St. Joseph University Women's basketball team welcomed the Spartans of Case Western, the Student Princes of Heidelberg, and the Blue Jays of Westminster for the Lauren Hill Tip-off Classic. The Lions faced off against Case Western on Friday and would conclude their weekend by taking on Heidelberg on Saturday, splitting the games.

 
Game One: MSJ – 55    Case Western – 68
The Lions would start the weekend off by taking on the Spartans of Case Western. In quarter number one, it was a close battle for the first 5 minutes as we went to a media timeout with a score of 9-7 in favor of the Spartans. Case Western would come out of the break on fire by going on a 9-0 and increasing their lead to 11. The Freshman duo of Morgan Jenkins and Karlee Mills would help put an end to the run as Jenkins would knock down a 3-point jump shot and Mills adding a fast break layup of her own. The Lions would trial the Spartans 22-12 at the end of the first.

The second period was a back-and-forth affair early on. Madison Drummonds would be the leader for the Lions in the period with 7 points while adding 2 rebounds. With the Spartans lead sitting at 10, a Mills three and a Drummonds three-point play on an and one opportunity quickly cut the lead to 4. Case Western would dominate the remainder of the period by ending on a 11-0 run making the score 44-29 at the half.

During the third period of play, the Lions defense would come out of the half playing dominate. The Lions held the Spartans to 23% from the floor after a first half shooting percentage of 48%. Mount St. Joseph was unable to take advantage as both teams would struggle offensively coming out of the break. Four different Lions would score in the period and the Lions would trial 54-37 at the end of 3.

The Final period would be the best offensive output for the Lions scoring 18 points. The Lions would shoot 42% from the field in the final quarter while adding two three-pointers and a pair of free throws. The run would just be a little too late as the Lions would fall to Case Western by the score of 68-55.

Madison Drummonds led the Lions 15 points and 9 rebounds on the night. Karlee Mills also would add 14 points of her own and a team high 4 assists on the night.

 
Game Two: MSJ – 79   Heidelberg – 63
The Lions would host Heidelberg in the second and final matchup of the Lauren Hill Tip-off Classic. The Lions would get dominate early production from Freshman Madison Drummonds and Senior Chloe Jansen as they would score the first 11 points for the Lions in growing their lead to 11-8. With Heidelberg holding a one-point lead in the final possession, Jansen would be fouled with under a second to play and connect on one of the free throw opportunities to bring the score to 19-19 at the end of one.  

In quarter number two, the defense for the Lions would be the star of the show. Heidelberg would be held to 11% shooting and the Lions forced 9 turnovers during the period. The scoring for the Mount would come from the freshman trio of Drummonds, Mills, and Morgan Jenkins and they would score 10 of the Lions 12 points and grow the lead to 31-24 at the half.

The second half for the Mount would be an offensive clinic. The Lions in the second half would shoot 55% from the field and 45% from the three-point line, while also shooting 4-6 on free throws in the final period down the stretch. Junior Ellie Oldendick would have the hot hand in the half as she would knock down 4 threes to put the game out of hand late. The Lions would go on to route the Student Princes by the final score of 79-63.

Four different Lions would end in double digits on the day. Madison Drummonds and Ellie Oldendick would lead the way with 18 and 17 points. Karlee Mills would add 14 points of her own while shooting 50% from the floor and adding an assist. Chloe Jansen finished with 10 points and a team high 6 assist on the day. Drummonds and Jansen would respectively add 10 rebounds giving them a double-double for the matchup.

The Mount St. Joseph Women's Basketball team will be back in action November 28th as they travel to Bluffton University for the start of HCAC conference play. Tip-off is schedule for 7:30pm.
