Lions Dominant Fourth Quarter boost them past Asbury

Cincinnati, Ohio – On Wednesday December 28th, the Mount St. Joseph Women's basketball team hosted the Eagles of Asbury University for their first game back at home since competing in St. Petersburg, Florida for the St. Pete's Classic.

            The Lions opened up the first period of play trailing 4-0 early. Madison Drummonds would get the offense going for the Lions as she knocked in the first basket of the game from inside the paint. Asbury would once again build the lead against the mount and grow an 8-2 lead. Anyiah Murphy connected on a three-point jump shot assisted by Karlee Mills, followed by Mills getting to the free throw line and connecting on a pair of free throws in back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 9. As the quarter came to a close, Chloe Jansen would score a fast break layup in the paint and Carlee Daulton finished 1-2 from the line as the Eagles led the Lions 13-12 at the end of one.

            The second period began once again with a Madison Drummonds layup which boosted the Lions ahead by one. In the first two minutes, the Lions stellar defense would continue as they opened the period on an 8-0 run to build the lead to a game high 7 points as Coach Mayes used the Eagles first timeout. After the timeout, the Eagles slowly pulled back into the game as the score found itself tied at 25. An Eagles three put Asbury ahead and a Shelby Turner Layup ended the period at a 28-27 score at the half.

            Quarter number three was a back-and-forth affair. As the eagles built their lead up to six, Drummonds once again added a much-needed basket for the Lions followed by an Ellie Oldendick three to trim the lead to one. After a couple mount turnovers, Asbury found their lead throw back to 5 points as the Lions called a timeout to settle down. Following the timeout, Chloe Jansen and Oldendick connected on back-to-back three-point jump shots to pull the Lions ahead with 4:47 remaining in the third. With the quarter coming to a close, Madison Drummonds added a layup on the left side of the basket to trim the Eagles lead to 48-45 at the end of 3 periods.

            The fourth and final period would result in the Lions best offensive output of the night. The 25-point final quarter would be quickly started by Jansen would tie the game up with a three. The two teams would trade baskets until Karlee Mills three pointer gave the Lions the lead with 5:25 remaining. Following the shot, a layup from Oldendick, a pair of free throws from Drummonds, and another made shot from behind the arc for Mills, gave the Lions an 8-point advantage with 3:40 remaining. The Stellar defense once again showed for the Lions as a couple of forced turnovers and Mills knocking down free throws at the end, Sealed a 70-65 victory over the Eagles of Asbury University.

Four Lions would find the Double-digit mark. They were led by Karlee Mills who scored 18 points while shooting 7-8 from the free throw line. Mills also added 6 assists on the night. Chloe Jansen also produced a nice outing for the Lions as she poured in 16 points of her own with 8 rebounds while shooting 50% from the field.

The Lions next game will feature them heading on the road to Defiance College on New years eve to take on the Yellow Jackets. Tip-off is scheduled for 2pm.
