Lions Fourth Quarter Performance Leads Them To Victory

CINCINNATI, Ohio – On Saturday, February 5th your Mount St. Joseph Lions welcomed the Manchester Spartans to the Harrington Center for an HCAC matchup. The Lions were led by Chloe Jansen (Fort Thomas, Ky. / Highlands) with 29 points and a late forth quarter push propelled the Lions to a 66-52 victory for their 4th HCAC win on the year.

The Lions started slow on the offensive end as they found themselves trailing 6-2 four minutes into the game. Haley Scott (Cincinnati, Ohio / Oak Hills) would end the run with a three-point basket. The Lions and Spartans battled it out the rest of the period. Each team would finish the period shooting 30% from the floor as the Lions trailed 17-13 at the end of the period.

The Second Period of play was off to a bang as Ellie Oldendick (Gallatin, Ky. / Gallatin) would knock down a three-pointer on the first possession followed by a fast break layup. Oldendick would also pull down a rebound and push it up court as Jansen would finish the floater to give the lions the lead after the 7-0 run. The score would once again shift back and forth as Jansen and Oldendick continued their hot performances. Ellie Oldendick would hit her second three of the quarter to take the lead back after Manchester tied the game. Chloe Jansen would follow that shot with a three of her own and finish the quarter with back-to-back pull up jump shots to give the Lions a 32-29 lead heading to half.

The third period of play would remain the same as no team could find a way to pull away. The Lions would struggle offensively. Four different Lions would score in the period, Julia Gooding (Cleves, Ohio / Taylor) would have a big impact on the offensive glass with a put back layup to get the Lions back on track.  With 3:07 remaining, Ella Breitfelder (Cincinnati, Ohio / Seton) would connect on a long two-point jumper to end the Spartans run. The Lions would then grow the lead to 3 points on free throws before the Spartans hit a buzzer beater to bring to score to 41-40 heading into the final period.

The Lions would come out hot in the final period, a pair of three-point jump shots by guards Chloe Jansen and Shelby Turner (Pendleton, Ky. / Pendleton). The duo would boost the Lions to pulling away as they scored a combined 20 of the Lions 25 forth quarter points. Oldendick would put the game out of reach as she would hit her fourth three pointer. The Lions would ice the game with free throws at the end to pull out the 66-52 victory.

The Lions were led offensively by Chloe Jansen who scored 29 points and followed that up with 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Ellie Oldendick would continue her hot shooting by going 4 of 6 from behind the arc and pouring in 14 points for the Lions.
