Lions Fall Short to Wilmington

Wilmington, Ohio—On Wednesday, April 27 the Mount St. Joseph University Baseball Program traveled to Wilmington College.  This travel would represent the final game of the four game season series between the two clubs.  Despite a great effort, the Lions fell short by a final score of 8-7.

In the visitors half of the second, the Lions pushed their first run across the plate.  This came when Anton Mere hit a shallow RBI single.  Again in the top of the third the Lions added three runs to their cause.  Joshua Hagans drove a two run home run.  Later in the same inning, third-basemen, Andrew Harrison crushed a ball into left field to drive in Tyrell Anderson.

Fast forward to the top of the fifth, Tyrell Anderson continued his hot streak with a solo home run.  This deep ball gave the Lions a 5-0 lead.  At this point Wilmington put a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth.

In the top of the seventh the Lions added their sixth and seventh runs of the game when Nicholas Sheilds singled into right field to score Anton Mere and Jake Sanders.  In the bottom of the eighth inning Wilmington added four and pushed the two across in the bottom of the ninth to take the 8-7 win.

In the seven run scoring output, several players collected multiple hits.  Jake Sanders finished with three hits in four at-bats and one walk.  Mere collected three hits over five at-bats and one RBI.  Jake Lawson, Ryan Murray and Tyler Herbers each added two hits.  The pair of Sheilds and Hagans each finished with two RBI each.  On the mound Ryan Caulfield added to his scoreless stretch, pitching four scoreless innings.  This extends the streak to 14 and 2/3 innings.

Following this game the Lions will prepare for their final home games of the season.  On Saturday, April 30 the Lions will host the Spartans of Manchester University in double header action.  First pitch of game one is set for 12 PM.  For continued coverage of this upcoming game and all other MSJ Athletics, continue to follow msjlions.com
