The Mount Sweeps Manchester on Senior Night

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Saturday, April 29th your Mount St. Joseph University softball team welcomed the Spartans of Manchester to the MSJ Softball Complex. It was Senior Night at the MSJ Softball Complex and we honored our two softball seniors, Kamryn McCool and Kaitlin Leslie. The Lions ended their final home double-header with a sweep while they inch closer to post-season play.

GAME ONE: MSJ - 9     MANCHESTER - 1

Senior Kamryn McCool took the circle one last time for the Lions at MSJ Softball Complex in game one. McCool did not disappoint pitching 6 innings allowing just a single run on 4 hits while striking out 7 batters.

Offensively, the Lions struggled out of the gate. Manchester scored first tacking on a run in the top half of the 4th. But, the Lions would respond nicely in the bottom half of the 5th. Kaci Finchum would lead off the inning with a single up the middle. Kelsi Stevenson would get her and another across with a single to center field giving The Mount a 2-1 lead. The Lions weren't done yet, as they piled on the runs in the 6th. Rachel Gabbard starting the inning by reaching base on an error followed by a single from Maddie Kennedy. Kaci Finchum delievered again for the Lions singling up the middle and bringing in a pair of runs. Next for the Lions was Elizabeth Ivers and she crushed a ball to right center earning a triple. In the next at-bat Emily McDonald would single to right field giving the Lions a 5-1 lead. After a pair of walks the bases were loaded with the freshman phenom Macy Cornelius ready to step into the box. Cornelius delivered in a big way tripling to left center and clearing the bases. After another walk and just 1 run shy of ending the game, Senior Kaitlin Leslie came to the plate. With 2 outs Leslie would crush a ball off the wall in right center bringing in the winning run! After 6 innings of play the Lions were victorious by a score of 9-1.

GAME TWO: MSJ - 2    MANCHESTER - 1

In game two Casey Kemp took the circle for The Mount. Kemp was masterful giving up just 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 6 batters en route to her 14th victory on the season.

Offensively, the Lions were held in check for most of the game. Just like game one, Manchester would get on the board first in the top of the 3rd but the Lions would respond back in the bottom half. Ali Lang would get things started for the Lions with a 1 out triple down the right field line. Lang would then score on an error tying the game at 1 run a piece. After a scoreless top half of the 4th the Lions were ready to take the lead. Maddie Kennedy would get the ball rolling for the Lions with a 1 out double down the right field line. Kaci Finchum continued to add to her impressive stat line with a single up the middle followed by a RBI single from Elizabeth Ivers to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage. But, that would be all the offense that the Lions needed as Casey Kemp mowed through the Spartans lineup. After 7 innings the Lions completed the sweep defeating Manchester 2-1.

We would like to give a huge thank you to our two Mount Softball Seniors, Kamryn McCool and Kaitlin Leslie. We appreciate all of your hard work on and off the field and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!
