SALISBURY, Md. - On Friday, May 20th your Mount St. Joseph University softball team traveled to Salisbury University to take on the Sea Gulls in the NCAA DIII Super Regionals. The Lions showed terrific defense against the #4 DIII softball squad in the country as well as a dominant performance from
Kamryn McCool in the circle. The Lions fell short but will have a chance to advance to Salem, Va.for the the NCAA DIII Nationals with a pair of wins on Saturday, May 21st.
The Lions displayed great pitching paired with excellent defense in game one. The Lions made a trio of sound defensive plays to keep them in the ballgame. In the bottom of the 1st Freshman centerfielder
Emily McDonald would lunge forward to make an excellent catch to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the 2nd the Sea Gulls would add their only run of the contest pushing forward 1-0. Following the run with two outs and a runner on second Freshman
Macy Cornelius would flash the leather making a spectacular grab down the 3rd base line. Cornelius gave up her body stretching all the way out to save a run and limit the damage to just 1 run on the inning.
After a pair of quiet innings for the Lions' offense Freshman
Emily McDonald would make another outstanding grab. This time the centerfield drifted to her right and laid out for a spectacular catch ending the 4th inning.
But, the Lions could not manufacture any runs offensively falling 1-0 to begin the Super Regional. Here is what Head Coach
Beth Goderwis had to say following the game, "We are going to go out and get back to work. We will do some hitting in the cage tomorrow and concentrate on a few other things. As long as we go out and play the defense that we did today and get our hitting going, we will be in a great spot. I'd like to thank all of our parents, President Dr. Williams, and Athletic Director
Melanee Wagener for all of their support. The following that we have had all season, coming 10 hours to Maryland is pretty impressive. We can't thank our fans, Dr. Williams and
Melanee Wagener for supporting us here in Maryland."
The Lions are back in action tomorrow seeking a trip to Salem, Va. for the NCAA DIII Nationals. The Lions will face off again versus Salisbury with game 1 begininng at 1pm.
