CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Thursday, September 1st your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the #14 Colonels of Centre College to Schueler Field to open the 2022 season. The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the 16th minute igniting the Lion faithful. The Colonels would tie the game just before halftime crushing the Lions' momentum. After the break the Colonels pushed the offensive side of the pitch and quickly tallied 4 goals in 10 minutes. After 90 minutes of play The Mount could not find the net again falling to Centre 5-1.
The Lions got off to a hot start in the 16th minute of play. Sophomore McKenzie Schneeman recieved the ball at midfield and looped a pass over the Centre defense heading towards the foot of fellow Sophomore
Ella Pittman. Pittman battled with the Centre defender to gain possesion but the Colonel defender would be the one to put the ball in the net to give the Lions an early 1-0 advantage.
The Lions would get another chance in the 19th minute of play. This time it was Pittman delievering the pass on a cross from the right wing to Schneeman. Schneeman awaited the cross and delievered a beautiful header which narrowly missed the net ricocheting off the left post.
However, the Colonels responded well ending the half with 3 shots in the last 5 minutes including an equalizing goal in the 45th minute of play.
After halftime the Colonels pushed forward quickly, firing 4 shots in the first 10 minutes of the half. It wasn't long until the Colonels would find the net as they tallied 4 goals in 10 minutes to extend their lead to 5-1 with 15 minutes remaining. The Lions offense was unable to find their footing in the second half and as the final whistle blew, #14 Centre defeated the Lions 5-1.
UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions travel to Sewanee, Tennessee to compete against the Tigers of Sewanee and the Scots of Maryville. The Lions faceoff against Sewanee on Saturday, September 3rd with kickoff starting at 6pm. The Lions second game will kick off at 10am on Sunday, September 4th when the Lions take on Maryville.
