MARIETTA, Ohio - On Sunday, September 11th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Marietta College to take on the Pioneers in a non-conference clash. The Lions were desperate for a win entering the contest 0-4 to start the season. Each squad was unable to generate any offensive firepower early but, a late goal from Sophomore McKenzie Schneeman gave The Mount the lead with just 2 minutes remaining in the contest. The Lions held off the Pioneers one last time and secured the first victory of the season.
In the first half the Lions pushed the offensive tempo. The Lions flooded the net with shots to begin play firing 6 shots in the first 15 minutes. But, the Pioneers had no answer as the Lions defense held strong.
Catherine Hatfield returned to the field for the Lions after missing the first 4 games of the year. Hatfield proved to be a key piece in the midfield commanding The Mount's young squad. The Lions defense surrendered just 3 shots in the first half as goalkeeper
Madison Hart was only asked to save 1 shot. However, after 45 minutes of play neither side found the back of the net ending the half tied 0-0.
In the second half of play the Lions did not change their approach. The Lions continued to pressure the Pioneers defense beginning the half with a pair of shots from
Paige Adams. Following the shots from Adams the Lions fired 10 more shots at the Pioneer's keeper before striking gold. Sophomore McKenzie Schneeman finally broke through for the Lions in the 88th minute of play. The Lions were awarded a free kick just outside the box after a Marietta foul. Schneeman approached and hammered the ball to the upper left hand corner of the goal sneaking past the keeper's outstretched glove giving the Lions a late 1-0 advantage. Marietta had no answer and after 90 minutes of play the Lions were victorious by a score of 1-0.
