Lions Cruise Past Berea 3-0

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Wednesday, September 14th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Mountaineers of Berea College to Schueler Field for a non-conference matchup. Following their first win of the season, the Lions were eager to be back on their home turf. The Lions offense got moving quickly netting their first goal of the night in just the 7th minute of play. After halftime the Lions offense picked up again scoring two more goals to boost their lead. Layla Youtsler and Kerigan Pollard provided the insurance goals for the Lions as they defeated the Mountaineers 3-0.

To begin play the Lions put an emphasis on ball control. The Lions commanded the possession early and pushed the offensive attack. After a short pass from a Mountaineer defender Sophomore Sydney Bell would take possession and fire a pass to McKenzie Schneeman. Schneeman would load up and hammer a ball to the top left corner going straight through the goalkeeper's gloves giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. The Mount would continue to control the pace but could not find the net for the remainder of the half. After 45 minutes the Lions held a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half of play the Lions picked up where they left off. The Mount continued to control the ball on the offensive side and finally got another opportunity on net. After a failed clear from the Mountaineer defense the Lions were awarded a corner kick. Freshman Layla Youtsler would line up to take the kick for the Lions. She stepped straight back and powered a cross straight to the front of the net. The Mountaineers' goalkeeper came out to make the catch but the ball slipped through her hands and in the net for the Lions second goal of the contest.

But, the Lions weren't done yet. The Mount gained possession at midfield with Senior Catherine Hatfield sending a pass to fellow senior Ashley Wilson. Wilson then would poke a pass through the Berea defense in stride to Sophomore Kerigan Pollard who was sprinting towards the net. Pollard would dribble once finding herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Pollard sliced a shot toward the bottom left corner finding the back of the net increasing The Mount's lead to 3-0.

Following the goal the Lions took a more defensive approach. The Lions defense held strong and after 90 minutes of play they were victorious by a score of 3-0. Goalkeeper Madison Hart recorded a clean sheet finishing the game with 1 save. McKenzie Schneeman, Layla Youtsler and Kerigan Pollard all scored for the Lions while Sydney Bell and Ashley Wilson recorded assists.
