Lions Score Late but Fall Short to Olivet

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Sunday, September 25th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Comets of Olivet College to Schueler Field for their final non-conference matchup. The Lions fell down early conceding a goal in the 18th minute and again in the 63rd minute. But, the Lions struck back scoring a goal of their own in the 84th minute bringing the score to 2-1. But, the Comets defense held strong for the final 6 minutes as The Mount fell to Olivet 2-1.

In the first half the Comets came out firing. Olivet controlled the pace and eventually scored off a cross to put them ahead 1-0 in the 18th minute. The Lions defense held strong for the rest of the half heading into halftime trailing just 1-0.

After halftime Olivet again would push the pace. This time the Olivet forward found himself in great position in front of the net and scoring to put the Comets ahead 2-0 in the 63rd minute.

But, the Lions continued to fight and would get the perfect opportunity in the 84th minute. Following a blocked shot from Olivet, Luis Martinez Velez would send a massive clear hammering the ball 60 yards down the field. Chasing after the ball was Forward Michael Abel and an Olivet defender. As the two foot-raced after the ball Gilberto Quintero would loop around behind the defender stealing the ball in the box and quickly sending a chip pass to Michael Abel.As the ball was kicked an Olivet defender's hand hit the ball resulting in a penalty kick for The Mount. Willis Johnson stepped to the spot to take the kick and powered the ball to the right hand side of the net past the keeper's glove and into the net, trimming the Olivet lead to 2-1.

Following the goal the Lions got right back on the attack and had another opportunity. This time Willis Johnson whipped in a cross to Michael Abel. Abel controlled the past, slid past a defender and sent a chip shot over the diving goalkeeper. The shot just missed the net flying just feet over the crossbar. But, the Lions would get one more chance to equalize. In the 86th minute the Lions were awarded a free kick following a foul on Michael Abel from about 40 yards away from the net. Luis Martinez Velez stepped up to take the kick sending a looping pass towards the box. Defender Michael Smith would get a foot on the ball sending it softly to the right corner of the net. The Comet's goalkeeper reached out but missed the ball as it ricocheted off the right woodwork and then into the hands of the goalkeeper.

That proved to be the Lions final shot on net as the Lions fell short 2-1 to the Comets of Olivet.
