CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Tuesday, September 6th, your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Cougars of UC-Clermont to Schueler Field. The Lions returned to Schueler Field for their 2022 home opener seeking their first win of the new season.
The Lions attacked early pushing the offensive tempo.
Michael Abel and
Michael Smith both sent shots at the net but could not mark the score sheet. UC-Clermont then went on the counter attack. The Cougars rushed down the right side and slipped a goal into the right corner giving them a 1-0 lead.
But, the Lions answered quickly. The Mount did not back down after surrendering the goal, pushing the offensive attack once again.
Luis Martinez Velez sent a ball down the left sideline, right to the feet of
Willis Johnson. Johnson then made a quick move to evade the defender and came barreling towards the box. As he entered the box he was tripped from behind, drawing a penalty kick. Johnson stayed to take the kick and it paid off as he crushed the ball into the bottom right corner equalizing the match at 1.
But, the Cougars would not go away. They got on the score sheet again in the 36th minute to give themselves a 2-1 lead heading into halftime. After halftime the Cougars took control of the offensive side of the pitch. Just 3 minutes into the half UC-Clermont again scored adding to their lead making the score 3-1. The Lions defense held strong for the rest of the half but could not push another goal across. After 90 minutes of play the Lions fell to UC-Clermont by a score of 3-1.
UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions Men's Soccer team will travel to Wilmore, Ky. on Friday, September 9th to take on the Eagles of Asbury. Kick-off is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
