Women’s Basketball earns hard fought win over Earlham as Murphy Scores Career High

Richmond – On Saturday January 14th, your Women's basketball team traveled on the road to take on the Earlham Quakers for the Lions 7th HCAC contest of the season. Sophomore Anyiah Murphy took the lead offensively as she scored a career high 19 points against the Quakers to lead the Mount to a 66-54 victory.

The first quarter of basketball was an back and forth affair between these two teams as each shared a run throughout the quarter. The Lions ability to create steals and grab offensive rebounds allowed them to start with a quick 8-2 lead as four different Lions found the bottom of the net in that span. As the Quakers went on a run of their own to take a 13-10 lead, Sienna Slaughter made a post move layup to shift the momentum. The Lions would then take advantage of the inside out game as Madison Drummonds found Chloe Jansen for a three. As the quarter came to a close, a Karlee Mills steal led to a fast break layup by Anyiah Murphy to give the Mount a 17-16 lead.

As the second quarter began, Madison Drummonds quickly boosted the lions offensively with a jumper from the elbow and a layup to build the lead. Jansen then converted 2-2 from the free throw line. With 4:33 remaining in the period, Freshman Morgan Jenkins would check into the game as she would make an immediate impact by hitting the first three pointer of the quarter for the Lions and building the lead to 9. With the lead sitting at 9, the Quakers offensive would start to pick up but the lead would remain there as Murphy and Drummonds added a few more baskets of their own to halt a major run. By the end of the period, the Lions took a 36-30 lead into the break.  

The Lions quickly ramped up their defensive pressure in the second half by only allowing the Quakers to score a game low 10 points in the third quarter. Anyiah Murphy wasted no time once again taking the lead in the Lions offense as she started with the first two baskets for the Mount. Chloe Jansen remained to stay hot from behind the three point line as she knocked in her second in as many shots to build the lead to a game high 12 points. As for the defense, the Lions held Earlham to only 33% shooting in the quarter while creating 7 turnovers in the 10 minute period.  The Lions lead would sit at 47-40 entering the 4th.

In the final quarter of play, Earlham would score the first basket to trim the lead to 5. Following a Drummonds field goal, Murphy would continue her hot shooting night by going 3-3 from the field 2-2 from behind the arc and a self-made 8 point run to boost the lead to 13. With time slowly running down the Lions would dominate the remainder of the period. Madison Drummonds finished with the final two layups including an and one opportunity while Morgan Jenkins and Chloe Jansen closed the game out shooting 4-4 from the free throw line as the Lions defeated the Quakers 66-54.

Anyiah Murphy led the way for the Lions with a career high 19 points and 9 rebounds. Madison Drummonds also had a respectable 18 points and 9 rebounds.

Up next, the Lions will play host to Franklin College on Wednesday January 18th. Tip off is schedule for 7:00pm.
