Lions Fall at Home to Earlham

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Saturday, October 7th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Quakers of Earlham College to Schueler Field. The Quakers jumped out in front to start the game but didn't hold the lead for long. The Lions would equalize just 4 minutes later, heading into halftime tied at 1. In the 2nd half each team battled to push a goal across but it wasn't until the final moments that the Quakers would regain their lead. The Quakers would score a penalty kick goal with just 3 minutes remaining to take a 2-1 lead before taking down the Lions.

In the 1st half Lions goalkeeper Aaron Smith was impressive. Smith kept the game tied for the remainder of the 1st half with 5 key saves. However, the Quakers would finally break through in the 36th minute. The Quakers would score on a corner kick to give them 1-0 advantage. But, the Lions would answer quickly. The Mount would receive a corner kick with Luis Martinez Velez back to take the kick. Martinez Velez would then whip the ball into the box with a plethora of Earlham defenders paired against the Lions attack. The ball would sneak by the Earlham defenders and directly fo the foot of Michael Abel. Abel would then bury the ball into the bottom right hand corner to equalize the game at 1 in the 40th minute of play. Each squad would be held for the final 5 minutes heading into the half tied at 1.

In the 2nd half, Lions goalkeeper Aaron Smith would again flash in the net. Smith made another 6 saves for the Lions in the half before a penalty kick would be awarded to the Quakers for a foul in the box. The Quakers didn't waste the opportunity netting the goal in the 87th minute, leaving the Lions with just 3 minutes to equalize. Jacob Trusty would get a shot off for the Lions but couldn't find the target as the Lions fell at home to the Quakers of Earlham 2-1.

Despite the loss, Aaron Smith looked sharp in the net saving a career high 11 shots. Michael Abel added his 4th goal of the season sharing the team lead with Killian Riley. Luis Martinez Velez picked up his 5th assist of the season. That mark leads the Lions and ranks 4th in the HCAC.
