Lions Remain Unbeaten Finishing 2-0 at the Fred Raizk Memorial Classic

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Over the weekend your Mount St. Joseph University Women's Basketball team traveled to Wilmington College to compete at the Fred Raizk Memorial Classic. The Lions cotinued their hot start taking down La Roche and Asbury to remain unbeaten on the year. The Lions started the weekend off taking down La Roche behind Freshman Whitney Warfel's 25 point, 11 rebound effort. On Saturday, the Lions held on for a 64-57 victory over Asbury to move their record to 5-0 on the year. 

GAME ONE: MOUNT - 83     LA ROCHE - 73
On Friday, the Lions trailed early on to the Redhawks of La Roche. Each team swapped leads to begin the quarter. But, after a 3-pointer from Karlee Mills with 4:29 remaining the Redhawks would go on a 8-2 run. The Lions would end the 1st Quarter trailing 20-13. To begin the 2nd quarter, the Redhawks built on their lead. Their lead would get up to 12 before the Lions would begin to chop it down. After falling down 12, Whitney Warfel started to take control for the Lions. Following the deficit, Warfel added 6 points along with 4 from both Chloe Jansen and Anyiah Murphy to pull the Lions within 4 heading into halftime. 

In the 2nd half, the Lions offense started to click. After the Redhawks built their lead back up to 10 the Lions offense began to find its rhythm. A jumper from Amanda Lovejoy and a pair of 3s from Annabelle Williams and Warfel got the Lions within 4 with 2:57 remaining in the 3rd. But, the Redhawks would again answer holding a 5 point lead heading into the final 10 minutes. 

In the 4th, the Lions wasted no time getting hot. Ellie Oldendick began the half with back-to-back 3 point buckets to give the Lions the lead followed by a layup from Karlee Mills. The Redhawks would tie the score at 60 with 6:57 left to play but the Lions would go on another run. The Lions would then go on a 11-4 run to take a 71-64 lead with 3:44 left. Following their run the Lions would grab onto their lead and not let go. As the final horn blew, the Lions started their weekend off right with a 83-73 victory over the Redhawks of La Roche. 

GAME TWO: MOUNT - 64     ASBURY - 57
On Saturday, the Lions carried their hot hand from Friday. The Mount exploded to begin the game going on a 18-2 run. Karlee Mills, Morgan Jenkins, Whitney Warfel and Chloe Jansen all scored to get the Lions on track early. The Eagles answered but the Lions still held control of the game heading into the 2nd quarter leading 20-11. In the 2nd, Asbury answered again. The Eagles drew within 3 with 6:23 left in the half. But, each squad then traded buckets before Mills sinked a pair of free throws to enter halftime in front 33-28. 

To begin the 2nd half, each team traded buckets. The Eagles came within 2 with 6:53 left but a 3 point bucket from Oldendick and free throws from McKenzie Butler padded the Lions lead again. The Lions built their lead with layups from Jansen and Warfel to close out the 3rd ahead 50-42. In the 4th, the Lions grabbed the 1st bucket but the Eagles slowly crawled their way back to trailing by just 5 with 6 minutes left. But, a layup and a 3-pointer from Mills boosted the Lions lead once again to 59-52. The Eagles fought but couldn't get past the Lions as The Mount took down Asbury 64-57 to remain unbeaten so far this season. 

Whitney Warfel led the Lions offense over the weekend tallying 31 points, 17 rebounds and 4 steals. Morgan Jenkins was a jack-of-all-trades for the Lions finishing this weekend with 27 points, 18 rebounds and 8 assists. Chloe Jansen was effective once again scoring 23 points while tallying 12 rebounds and 4 assists over the pair of games. Karlee Mills was effective from the Point Guard position tallying 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ellie Oldendick was impressive registering 19 points 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Oldendick was dominant from beyond the arc shooting 6-12 on the weekend. 

UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions are back in action on Tuesday, November 21st as the Lions travel to Houston, Texas to take on the Celts of University of St. Thomas (TX). Tip-off is scheduled to begin at 6pm CT. The Lions will also face off against the Huskies of Houston Christian on Wednesday night at 6pm CT.
