CLERMONT, Florida - The Mount St. Joseph softball team opened their 2023 spring games with a sweep over Carroll University and Plymouth State.
GAME ONE | MSJ 2 - CU 1 | WP: C. Kemp (2-1) ; LP: G. Bradley (1-1)
The Lions got their trip underway with a win in a fantastic pitchers dual over a regional opponent.
Casey Kemp took the ball to the circle for the Lions and the junior did not disappoint. She allowed only a single run which was unearned and came after a walk to the leadoff batter of the game.
In the end Kemp's line was 7.0 innings pitched, allowing only 2 hits, 1 run (unearned), and a walk while striking out four opposing batters.
In a game that was a struggle offensively for both teams the Lions managed only five hits. Scoring a single run in the third and fourth innings.
Kelsi Stevenson delivered the RBI base-hit in the third, with the run in the fourth coming as a result of a Carroll error.

Elizabeth Ivers each registered a hit in the game.
GAME TWO | MSJ 7 - PS 2 | WP: C. Keller (2-3) ; LP: K. McGrath (1-1)
In game two coach Goderwis turned the ball to
Courtney Keller to start the game in the circle. The freshman was outstanding going the distance allowing only five hits and two earned runs while striking out a career-high 10 opposing hitters.
The Mount took over early in this one scoring a single run in the top of the first inning.
Ali Lang led off with a walk and was moved to second on a Stevenson sacrifice. An out later Keller laced a base-hit down the left field line to drive in the games first run.
The scoreline would stay a 1-0 until the Mount scored a second run in the top of the fourth inning. In the inning Lauren Miller hit a one-out double deep in to right field, a ball that narrowly missed going out of the park.
Kaci Finchum then followed with an RBI double of her own.
Then in the fifth they would send 11 batters to the plate scoring 5 runs taking advantage of 5 errors by Plymouth State to score an additional five runs.
Plymouth State would score a pair of runs to make it close, but Keller slammed the door on any comback attempt.

The Lions will have an off day tomorrow before returning to Hancock Park on Tuesday when they will take on #24 Rowan and Fredonia.
