Post Dominates on the Mound as Lions sweep Defiance


Defiance, Ohio - Over the weekend, the Defiance Yellow Jackets and your Mount St. Joseph Lions squared off for an HCAC double-header matchup. In game one the Lions jumped on the scoreboard quickly and would never look back. Aidan Post would also go the distance on the mound as the Lions defeated the Yellow Jackets 10-2. In the second game of the afternoon, the Mount would trail after the first but end the game on a 14-0 scoring run as they would earn a 15-3 sweep over Defiance. 

 

GAME ONE: MSJ 10   Defiance 2

 

The Lions would waste no time taking an early lead in game one. The Lions would find a way to get two guys on as there were two outs. Following a walk to load the bases, Patrick Murray and Tyler Herbers would draw a walk themselves earning an RBI and giving the Lions a 2–0 advantage. The Lions would not stop there as Andrew Clements would come up with a big two out hit driving in a pair of runs to make the score 4-0 after the first. In the second, each team would add a run. Anton Mere got the inning started with a single up the middle and would swipe second base putting himself in scoring position. The Lions would then take advantage of an error from the Yellow Jackets as Mere crossed the plate giving them a 5-0 lead. After the second inning, Aidan Post would settle in for the Lions on the Mount allowing only one hit through the next five innings. Entering the 7th the Lions held a 5-1 lead over Defiance, like the first inning, the Mount would find a way to add insurance with two outs in the inning. Carter Owen and Ryan Murray would sit at first and second base as Herbers walked back up to the plate. Tyler would then hit a rope to right field scoring both Owen and Murray to grow the lead to 7-1. After a Clements single making it first and third for the Mount, Freshman Jordan Harley singled through the left side scoring Herbers. In the 9th, Patrick Murray got the inning started with a single to right allowing the two hottest hitters of the day in Herbers and Clements to come back up with RBI opportunities. Like they've done all afternoon, Herbers sent a shot to left center followed by Andrew singling after to drive in a pair of runs giving him his 4th RBI of the game. With a 10-1 lead, Post returned to the Mount with a chance to earn a complete game. Defiance would find a way to push across a run but Post would end the threat quickly striking out the last batter of the ballgame giving the Lions a 10-2 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

 

In game one Post would go 9 dominant innings allowing only 6 hits and striking out 7 batters earning his 4th win on the season. Andrew Clements led the Mount with a three hit performance driving in 4 RBI's and drawing a walk. Tyler Herbers would also go a respectable 2-3 driving in 3 RBI's, scoring 2 runs and hitting the only extra base hit for the Mount. 


GAME TWO: MSJ 15    Defiance 3

 

In the second game of the afternoon, the Lions would once again strike first in the top half of the first inning. Following a Kevin Schaaf single and an Ethan Mason double, Ryan Murray continued his great season with an RBI to put the Lions ahead 1-0. The Yellow Jackets would not go down quietly in their half of the first as they put up three to make it a 3-1 deficit for the Mount. In the second inning the Lions would find a way to quickly cut the deficit in half. With an out in the inning, Jake Sanders and Luke LeGault would double as LeGualt's would score Sanders. In the ballgame the Lions were able to push at least a run across in all 7 innings. In the third, Schaaf would lead off the inning with a double down the left field line and would quickly be knocked in by Ryan Murray as the Mount tied the ballgame up at 3. The fourth inning was the breaking point in the matchup, the Lions were able to push across six runs in the inning breaking the game open. Sanders led off the inning and quickly jumped on a fastball and sent it out to left field for his first homerun of the season. The lions would then get another runner in scoring position after a walk and a wild pitch. Anton Mere would then hit a ball to the right side of second base, scoring the runner. As the Lions sat with a pair of runners in scoring position, Ryan Murray once again would rope a double, scoring a pair. In the inning, the Lions would score 6 runs off 4 hits and took advantage of two Defiance errors. In the 5th, the Mount started the frame with three straight extra base hits. Mere and Schaaf would continue to take advantage of great chances each driving in a run. Entering the 7th inning the Mount were on the edge of earning a run-rule victory as Carter Owen kept the extra base hits going with a one out double. Max Kline would then enter the game to pitch hit for the Lions, Kline would send a ball to the left field fence scoring Owen to give the Mount a 15-3 lead. In the bottom half of the 7th inning, Sam Huston would complete the final three outs for the Mount giving them a 15-3 victory in 7 innings. 

 

On the Mound for the Lions Derek Richter would go 5 innings allowing six hits and earning six strikeouts which would propel him to his third win on the season. Four different Lions would go 3-4 in the ballgame as Ryan Murray led the way with 3 RBI's. Kevin Schaaf would come around to score four times while adding 2 RBI's of his own. The Mount were also able to steal 4 bases in the matchup.

 

UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday, May 2nd as they travel to Wilmore, Ky. to take on the Asbury Eagles. The two teams have squared off three times already this season with the Mount leading the season series 3 games to 1. The game is scheduled to begin at 5PM.
