LEXINGTON, Kentucky - The Mount St. Joseph University softball team squared off with the #1 seed Transylvania Pioneers in the winner's bracket finals of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships today. The game was the ultimate pitcher's dual and headed into extra innings tied at zero, before Transy got the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The big story in this game for the Lions was once again the performance of
Casey Kemp. The junior right-hander was on the mound the entire game, throwing 8 innings of shutout ball, before finally surrendering the only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Kemp was helped by some stellar defensive plays across the diamond but centerfielder
Emily McDonald made one of the best catches you could ever see in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two-outs and a runner on second base, McDonald raced into the left center gap and dove out to full extension to take a game-winning hit away from Transy.
The Lions offense struggled against the outstanding pitching from Transylvania, only registering a pair of hits in the nine innings.
Kelsi Stevenson and
Maddie Kennedy each had a hit.
Up next the Lions will take on Franklin tomorrow at 12:30 pm with the winner of that game scheduled to take on Transy in the Championship game directly after.
