PREVIEW | MSJ Football Hosts Hiram In Home Opener on Delhi Day

CINCINNATI, Ohio -  The Mount St. Joseph University football team (1-0, 0-0 HCAC) welcomes the Terriers of Hiram College (0-1, 0-0 NCAC) to Delhi for the Lions home opener on Saturday. Schueler field has been extremely kind to the Lions over the past two seasons, as they come into this one riding a 10-game home winning streak. The last loss came back on September 4, 2021 in a season opening defeat to Albion.

The Lions also come into this game once again after a season opening win over OAC foe Baldwin Wallace, as the Lions took down the Yellow Jackets in week one for the second consecutive year. The Mount currently finds themselves just outside the D3football.com top-25, as the top team in the "also receiving votes" category.

They put together a total team win in last weekends win, defensively they forced five BW turnovers and offensively it was the passing game that carried the day. Josh Taylor had a phenomenal day at quarterback, throwing for 420 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was able find a plethora of receivers, with eight different Lions catching passes and four Lions catching touchdowns. Joey Newton and Omar Porter Jr. led the team with six catches a peice, Newton had a pair of touchdowns while Porter added one of his own!

As stated before the Lions caused five turnovers in the game, with DeShawn Starks, Devon Donawerth and Brady Pierce each picking off a pass. Jack Tucker was dominant from his defensive tackle spot registering 9 tackles, 2 TFLs and a sack, for his play Tucker was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and the HCAC's Defensive Player of the Week.

This week provides a different test for the Lions as the welcome Hiram to the Mount. Hiram comes in after a 68-21 loss at the hands of Heidelberg. Historically these teams have only met three times in consecutive years from 2000-2002, with the Lions holding a narrow 2-1 series lead.

The game is scheduled for a Noon kickoff on Saturday, and is a big day as we celebrate Delhi Day and raise money to support Mount St. Joseph student Aiden Fertig who is currently battling cancer.
