BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph women's basketball team hit the road on Wednesday night, heading north to take on the Beavers of Bluffton in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup. The Lions got out to a quick start taking a 33-17 lead into the halftime break, but they would have to survive a fourth quarter charge from the Beavers to secure the win.
The Lions opening the second half with the commanding lead, looked poised to secure another HCAC victory. Bluffton had other ideas, after scoring just 17 points in the first half, the Beavers outscored the Lions 17-14 in the third. They saved their biggest run for the fourth quarter though opening the final quarter on a 12-2 run to cut their deficit to just three. From that point the outcome was in doubt the rest of the way, they would drill a three with 10 seconds to play to pull within one.
Karlee Mills would head to the line and knock down a pair to put the Lions back up by three. Bluffton would race the other way and get a decent look at a game-tying three-pointer at the horn, but it rimmed out giving the Lions the narrow victory.
Chloe Jansen's team-high 13 points led a balanced offensive attack that saw 10 different players score.
Ellie Oldendick added nine going 3-of-5 from behind the three point line. Jansen also had a team-high 7 rebounds,
Morgan Jenkins and
Hailey Guingrich each added 6 boards.
UP NEXT: The Lions will host the Earlham Quakers on Saturday in another HCAC contest, the game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
