TERRE HAUTE, Indiana - The Mount St. Joseph women's soccer team headed west to take on the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers on Saturday. The two squads came into the game tied atop the HCAC standings with 19 points on the season, with the win the Lions move into sole possession of first place with a game to play.
The Lions pulled ahead in with a first half goal from
Ella Pittman in the 26th minute.
Mckenzie Schneeman played a beautiful pass into the box, and Pittman put it into back of the net to pull the Lions ahead. They would create a few more opportunities but were unable to stretch their lead.
The stellar defensive effort of the Lions held the Fightin' Engineers to just a pair of shots on goal in the game. The backline of
Vivian Willis,
McKinzie Dotson,
Alondra Sotelo and
Alena Schirripa played all 90-minutes in front of
Jordan Schneider and the group was able to help the Lions salt away the win.
The win helps the Lions continue to control their own destiny in the hopes of an HCAC regular season title. Their match on Wednesday at Transylvania will decide the regular season championship and determine who has the top seed in the upcoming HCAC Tournament. Transylvania still has to play Bluffton, but should they get the expected result the Lions will hold a two point edge in the standings going into that match. The Lions will likely just need a tie on the road at Transy to secure the title.
With the win the Mount has secured at least one of the top two spots in the HCAC tournament and a bye through to the HCAC semi-finals. The Mount's opening tournament game will take place on Wednesday, November 6th at Schueler Field.
