CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph women's volleyball team took to the court on Saturday, welcoming the Manchester Spartans into the Harrington Center for an HCAC matchup. The Lions came into the match looking to bounce back after a straight sets loss at Transy on Wednesday. They were doing so against a Spartans squad that came into the game 4-0 in HCAC play and tied atop the conference.
Early in the match it looked like the Spartans would run away with the match, winning the first set 25-16. The second set would be much more competitive but once again the Spartans would secure the win, this time 25-21.
In the third set the Lions raced out to a 9-4 lead, but Manchester quickly raced back to take a 11-9 lead. The Lions took control of the set from that point eventually taking a 23-15 lead and securing the set win 25-18. They would come back to tie the match at 2 sets a piece with a 25-23 fourth set win, setting up a winner-take-all fifth set.
In the fifth set neither team led by more than two point through the early going. The Spartans looked like they were going to run away with the fifth set taking a 12-8 lead in the race to 15. They would eventually get the score to 14-11, but the Lions fought off three match points to tie the score at 14. Manchester gained the advantage at 15-14 after a Lions service error and once again had match point. The Mount would win the next three points to secure the 16-14 fifth set win and secure the match.
Freshman
Aubrey Miranda led the Lions offensive attack with a team-high 14 kills, and a .242 hitting percentage.
Hannah Graves was the lone other Lions in double-figures with 13 kills and an outstanding .387 hitting percentage. Middles
Sydney Doty and
Hannah Justice combined for 13 kills.
Jasmine Butler dished out 45 assists, while
Grace Wilking (13) and
Hannah Graves (11) each had double-figure digs.
