GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph softball team hit the road on Monday, heading to take on the Big Red of Denison. The games were the Lions first since wrapping up their annual trip to The Spring Games on March 15. The Lions took game one 6-3 before dropping game two 10-8, moving to 8-8 on the season.
GAME ONE | MSJ 6 - Denison 3
In game one of the double-header, MSJ sent senior ace
Casey Kemp to the circle to start the game. She was fantastic through the front five innings, she would allow three runs in the sixth inning but bounced back in the seventh to close the game. In the end her line score was a 7.0 inning complete game, allowing just 4 hits, and 3 earned runs while striking out a pair, earning her fifth run of the season.
The Lions offense got the scoring started in the top of the first inning.
Alayna Flynn led the game off with an infield single, and promptly stole second base. An out later
Maddie Kennedy laced an RBI double into left centerfield to get the Lions on the board.
They would go on to add five more in the fourth inning. With one out in the inning Lauren Miller drilled a solo homerun into right field, it was her first homerun of the season.
Avery Wiltermood then reached on an error, advancing to second on the play. She would come around to score after another Denison error with Kemp at the plate.
Sydney Hughbanks worked a one-out walk and an out later Flynn walked to load the bases.
Macy Cornelius then drilled a bases-clearing double into left center field.
The five run explosion was enough for Kemp, as it put the Lions in a position to eventually win the game.
GAME TWO | Denison 10 - MSJ 8
In game two both squad's had big offensive outputs, combining for 18 runs and 27 hits in the game.
Offensively the Lions were led by a 3-for-4 effort from
Courtney Keller, who added an RBI and a run scored. Hughbanks and Wiltermood were both a perfect 2-for-2 in their at-bats, with Wiltermood scoring three times in the game. Kennedy also added a pair of hits, and Flynn led the way with a pair of RBI.
The Lions drilled three doubles in the game, two from Wiltermood and one each from Flynn and
Kaci Finchum.
UP NEXT:
The Lions will open up HCAC play on Saturday with a trip to Franklin. The double-header is scheduled to get underway at 1:00 PM in Franklin, Indiana.
