CINCINNATI, Ohio – On Wednesday, April 17
th your Mount St. Joseph University men's lacrosse team welcomed the Golden Eagles of Spalding University to Schueler Field. It was Senior Night for the Lions as we honored
Jackson Simon,
Austin Combs and
Evan Deal. The Lions got ahead with an early lead but trailed by one entering halftime. In the second half, the offense slowed for each squad but the Golden Eagles were able to hold off the Lions by a score of 12-10.
To open play, the Lions offense was clicking.
Zane Tarr got the Lions' offense started with a goal to tie the game at one. Junior
Jacob Murray gave the Lions their first lead with 7:32 remaining in the quarter making the score 2-1. Spalding would answer, taking the lead but not for long. Tarr netted his second goal of the quarter, tying the score at three. With under 30 seconds remaining, Freshman
Antonino Gonzalez found
Dareon McGrone in front of the net, scoring the go-ahead goal giving the Lions a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes of play.
To begin the second quarter,
Austin Combs extended the Lions lead making the score 5-3. After an answer from Spalding, Tarr again found the net for the Lions. With just over 11 minutes remaining in the half, Tarr secured his hat trick giving the Lions a 6-4 advantage. But the Golden Eagles answered quickly taking a 7-6 lead with just over eight minutes remaining.
Jacob Murray gave the Lions some life scoring his second goal of the night and tying the game at seven. But Spalding broke the tie just before halftime, making the score 8-7.
In the second half, both teams had trouble moving the ball offensively. The Lions got on the board first, tying the game at eight with 8:52 remaining in the 3
rd quarter. Spalding answered right back netting a pair of goals to take a 10-8 advantage. The Lions weren't done offensively as Tarr continued his dominant night with his 4
th goal trimming the deficit to just one after three quarters of play.
To begin the fourth, the Golden Eagles went straight to work extending their lead to 11-9. The Golden Eagles added another with just over five minutes remaining, but the Lions were still in attacking distance. Following the goal, Gonzalez finally found the net for the Lions after assisting on a pair of goals to trim the Lions deficit to 12-10. The Lions kept pressuring offensively with shots from Murray, Tarr and McGrone but couldn't find the net down the stretch falling to Spalding 12-10.
Tarr led the way offensively for the Lions netting a career-high four goals. Murray followed with a hat-trick of his own with three goals. Gonzalez was productive offensively, assisting on two goals and scoring one.
