BATAVIA, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team bounced back after dropping the first two games of the series against Manchester, taking game three to avoid a sweep. The did so behind an outstanding start from freshman
Matt Frye, and a 15-hit effort from the offense.
The Lions got the offense started in this one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Jackson Gutzwiller led the inning off with a single into left center, advancing to third on a groundout. An RBI single from
Matt Brankamp got the Lions on the board, an out later
Anton Mere singled in right to driving in the second run of the inning.
In the top of the third, the Spartans had runners on second and third with one out. Frye then picked off the runner at second base for the second out, and after a walk got the final out of the inning to strand a pair.
In the bottom of the third the Lions offense scratched six runs, all coming with two outs to take an 8-0 lead.
Kevin Schaaf singled with one out, an out later Gutzwiller tripled to left center to drive him in.
Brennan Martin then hit an RBI single through the right side, and would score on an RBI double by Brankamp.
Jordan Harley then bunted for a hit and Mere followed with an RBI double, and
Jake Lawson followed with a two-run single to score the final run of the inning.
They would add another run in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring. Manchester was only able to score a single run coming in the seventh inning.
Frye got the win moving to 4-1 on the season, he pitched the front 7.0 innings allowing six hits and only 1 run while striking out 3.
Kaiden Morris came on out of the bullpen in the 8th inning, he pitched the final 2.0 innings allowing only a single hit.

The Lions will hit the road on Monday to take on the Wilmington Quaker in a late season non-conference matchup. After which they will wrap up the 2024 regular season with four more HCAC games, on Friday they will host Anderson at Xavier University and then on Sunday they will head to Lexington to take on the Transylvania Pioneers.
