HANOVER, Indiana - The Mount St. Joseph softball team headed to Hanover on Saturday looking for their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win, and after dropping game one they bounced back to secure the 7-3 win in game two.
In game one of the double-header the Lions offense was stifled by outstanding Hanover pitching. They managed just three hits and a single run in the game.
Casey Kemp got the start in the circle and was solid, but allowed four runs over 4.0 innings of work in the loss.
In game two Hanover looked to be on a similar trajectory, scoring a single run in the first three innings while holding the Lions scoreless. The Mount finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning.
Macy Cornelius led off of with a single to center field, and came around to score on an RBI double by
Kaci Finchum.
The offense finally exploded in the sixth inning, as the Lions pushed six runs across in the frame. Once again it was Cornelius leading it off with a single, they would then load the bases with no outs. Lily Kapala then drove in a pair of runs. They then loaded the bases again after
Emily McDonald was hit by pitch.
Kayla Bain was then called in to pinch hit and she delivered a two-run single into left field. The final run of the inning was scored on an RBI single by Cornelius as the Lions batted around.
Courtney Keller came on in relief in the third inning and pitched 3.2 innings of two hit ball to secure the win.
UP NEXT: The Lions will once again be on the road on Wednesday, heading south to take on the Pioneers of Transylvania University.
