Women's Basketball Falls 54-46 in Season Opener

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph women's basketball team opened its 2025–26 season on the road Saturday night, falling 54–46 to Capital University despite a strong effort and a spirited comeback in the middle quarters.

The Lions got off to a slow start offensively, as Capital took control early with a 9–0 first quarter. But MSJ responded with energy and precision in the second frame, outscoring the Crusaders 22–13 to cut into the deficit and swing momentum before halftime. The Lions battled on the glass throughout the night, pulling down 41 rebounds and converting 16 points off turnovers to stay within striking distance.

After the break, the teams traded runs, but MSJ's shooting cooled late. The Lions managed only five points in the fourth quarter while Capital closed strong to secure the win. Mount St. Joseph finished 19-of-67 from the field (28.4 percent) and 5-of-18 from beyond the arc (27.8 percent).

Karlee Mills led the way with 12 points and four rebounds. Morgan Jenkins added 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks, while Hailey Guingrich contributed 10 points and five boards in a balanced effort.

For Capital, Samaree Perkins posted 19 points and nine rebounds, hitting nine of her 13 free throws to pace the Crusaders.

The Lions will look to build on the positives from the opener and continue developing as the season gets underway.
