Ada, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph softball team hit the road to take on Ohio Northern University, coming away with a split in the doubleheader. The Lions secured a 10-6 victory in game one but fell just short in extra innings in game two, falling 8-7.
Game One: MSJ: 10 – ONU: 6
The Lions wasted no time getting on the board, scoring a run in the first inning before Ohio Northern quickly answered. MSJ broke the game open in the third, plating five runs, followed by three more in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Macy Cornelius led the offensive charge, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two stolen bases.
Lauryn Miller delivered two key doubles, helping The Mount maintain control throughout the game. The Lions outhit the Polar Bears by seven, creating more scoring opportunities and securing the 10-6 win in seven innings.
Game Two: MSJ: 7 – ONU: 8 (8 Innings)
Ohio Northern struck early, building a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning. The Lions responded in the fifth, exploding with five runs to tie the game and force extra innings.
In the eighth, MSJ took the lead when Cornelius' base hit, combined with
Alayna Flynn's aggressive base-running, put the Lions ahead. Moments later,
Avery Wiltermood's single to center drove in Cornelius, giving MSJ a two-run cushion.
However, the Polar Bears rallied in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs and walking it off with a single up the middle to take the 8-7 win.
Up Next: The Lions return home to the MSJ Softball Complex on Wednesday, March 26, for a doubleheader. Game one starts at 4 p.m., with game two to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
