GREENVILLE, Illinois - The Mount St. Joseph men's volleyball team got a pair of wins on Saturday. The Lions won a five set thriller over Westminster in their first match of the day before beating the host Greenville in straight sets..
MATCH ONE | MSJ 3 - Westminster 2
The Lions dominated the first two sets of the match winning 25-13 and 25-20, Westminster roared back to take the third and fourth 25-20 & 25-16.
With the teams splitting the first four sets the match went to a decisive fifth set. In that fifth set the early portion was back and fourth with neither team leading by more than one point until Westminster went on a four point run to take a 9-4 lead. The Mount answered the run with a five point run of their own with
Roger Wilcox at the service line, to tie the set again at nine. With the set tied at 11, the Lions went on another short run pushing their lead out to 14-11. They had three shots at a match-point but Westminster won two points in a row to draw within one. The final point of the game came on a kill by
Ben Carmosino, giving the Lions the win.
Offensively the Lions were led by an outstanding performance from
Carson Reed, who had a match-high 17 kills while hitting .342. The team registered 12 blocks in the match with
Ryan Bollhauer registering two solos and five assists. Carmosino had five kills and no errors (.625 hitting percentage), 39 assists and 10 digs.
MATCH TWO | MSJ 3 - Greenville 0
The Lions were dominant in their second match of the day, beating Greeneville 25-22, 25-16 and 25-23. They were led in the match by a trio of players with 11 kills,
Ryan Bollhauer,
Carson Reed and Roger WIlcox. The team hit .341 in the match led by Wilcox, who got his 11 kills on just 12 attempts hitting . 833 in the match.
Ben Carmosino dished out 35 assists in the match, adding 3 kills and 2 digs. Reed led the way with 11 digs in the match.
After dominating the first two sets of the match, it looked like the Lions would run away with the third as well. They led late in the set 20-13, but Greenville scored eight of the next nine points to tie the set at 21. The Mount took a two point lead at 24-22, but Greenville got a side-out to pull within one. With an opportunity to tie the set at 24, Greenville had a service error giving the Lions the match.

The Lions will be on the road again next weekend playing a pair of MCVL matches. Friday night they will be in Alliance, Ohio to take on Mount Union. Then on Saturday they will head to Berea, Ohio to take on Baldwin Wallace.
