Baseball Sweeps Bluffton Behind Outstanding Pitching

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team swept Bluffton on Sunday in an HCAC double-header. They took game one 9-5 and followed that up with a 12-2 win.

GAME ONE | MSJ 9 - Bluffton 5

The Lions sent sophomore Jackson Bucks to the mound to open the game, and the right-hander was outstanding. Bucks threw the front 7.1 innings allowing only 5 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 7 earning his first win of the season.

The Lions scored once in the bottom of the first inning to get ahead early. Jake Sanders drove in the first run of the game, scoring Anton Mere from third.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Lions until the fifth when once again Sanders delivered an RBI basehit.  Brennan Martin then drilled a three-run bomb to right field to put the Lions ahead 5-0. The scoring in the fifth would finish with an Austin Buckle two-out RBI triple that drove in Ethan Mason.

The Lions added one more in the bottom of the sixth, Jordan Harley led off with a triple and looked like he may be stranded there. With two-outs Martin laced an RBI single past a diving first baseman to score Harley.

They finished their scoring in the bottom of the seventh, Mason led off with a walk and Jackson Gutzwiller laced a two-run homer to left field.

Bluffton scored five times in the top of the 8th to get themselves within striking distance but Ian Busch slammed the door in the 8th. He then pitched a perfect ninth to finish the game.

GAME TWO | MSJ 12 - Bluffton 2

The Lions went with an opener in game two of the double header as Ryan Caulfield started the game. In that first inning Bluffton scored one unearned run off the senior lefty to take an early lead.

Evan Webb came on to pitch the second inning, he allowed a pair of hits to open the inning but struck out a pair and got a flyout to get through unscathed.

Matt Frye came on in the third and would be outstanding for the Lions. The sophomore pitched the next 6.0 innings allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out 10 earning his second win of the season.

The Mount got their scoring started with one run in the third, tying the game. Harley singled through the right side driving in Mere.

They exploded for seven in the fifth to blow the game open, Harley had a two run single, Harrison an RBI basehit and Sanders a three-run bomb in the frame.

The scoring continued with one in the sixth on a Harrison sac fly. In the seventh Buckle laced an RBI single up the middle.

Then in the 8th the Lions brought the mercy-rule into play as Jake Sanders singled into left scoring Harrison and Harley to secure the walk-off win.
