CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph softball team got the double-header sweep over Berea on Wednesday night. The Lions offense banged out 27 hits and scored 27 runs over a pair of mercy-rule victories.
GAME ONE | MSJ 11 - Berea 1 (5
In game one coach Goderwis sent
Emily Schottelkotte to the circle to start the game, the freshman pitched the front 4.0 innings allowing four hits earning her second win of the season.
The Lions got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, with five runs crossing the plate.
Macy Cornelius doubled to right center to open the game and moved to third on a bunt single from
Emily McDonald. McDonald quickly stole second base, an out later Lauren Miller doubled down the left field line to score Cornelius. McDonald scored on an RBI groundout from Mack Lawson. Miller then scored on an RBI single from
Maddie Kennedy. Kennedy eventually would steal home to score the fourth run of the frame, and the final run scored on an RBI single from
Alayna Flynn.
The Mount added three in the bottom of the third inning,
Sydney Hughbanks started the inning with a single to left field. An out later Flynn singled up the middle, and Cornelius followed with an RBI double. With two outs in the inning
Shelby Rakosky singled up the middle to drive in two more.
They would add another three in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kennedy got the inning started with with a basehit through the right side. Hughbanks singled advancing Kennedy to third, and
Avery Wiltermood followed with an RBI basehit. With two outs Cornelius drilled a two run single into center to finish the Lions scoring.
Lesleigh Reimers came on to pitch a perfect fifth inning to finish the game off for the Mount.
Cornelius led the way with a 3-for-4 effort, with two doubles, 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Kennedy, Hughbanks, McDonald, and Flynn each added a pair of hits.
GAME TWO | MSJ 16 - Berea 0
Game two of the day was even better for the Mount as the offense scored 16 runs and the
Mollie Sharp threw a 1-hit shutout.
Sharp was magnificent allowing just the one hit, while striking out six runs on just 65 pitches through 5.0 innings.
Once again the Lions got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, Cornelius singled through the left side to start it and then stole second. McDonald reached on a fielder's choice in which no outs were recorded. Rakosky then drove in Cornelius with an RBI groundout, and Miller scored McDonald with an RBI double.
The Lions then scored eight times in the bottom of the second inning.
Kiley Hankenhoff started the party with a single down the left field line, with Wiltermood and Flynn following with walks to load the bases. Cornelius then hit her third double of the day to drive in a pair. The third run of the inning scored on a wild pitch, which brought home Flynn. McDonald then walked and stole second and Rakosky followed with a two-run double. She would score on an RBI single from Miller, Miller was lifted for a
Skylar Fletcher. After a single from Lawson, Fletcher would come around to score on a wild pitch. After an out Hankenhof drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the third Coach Goderwis began to utlize her bench, after a Cornelius walk
Alix Streeval pinch hit for
Emily McDonald. Streeval singled to center to move Cornelius to third, Rakosky then reach on an error to load the bases.
Skylar Fletcher remained in the game after pinch running as the DP, she walked to force in a run.
Sydney Stewart then entered the game for Lawson, and quickly singled to center to drive in a pair.
They scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth inning, all coming with two-outs in the inning. McDonald got it started with a two-out single,
Clare Lopeman then pinch hit for Rakosky with and drove an RBI single up the middle. Fletcher then tripled down the left field line to drive in a run, and Stewart reached on an error forcing in the final run of the game.
Cornelius, Miller and Hankenhof all were a perfect 2-for-2 in the game, Cornelius scored 3 times and drove in a pair.
