LEXINGTON, Kentucky - The Mount St. Joseph women's basketball team traveled south to Lexington on Friday to take on Transylvania in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament semi-finals. The Lions played well, leading with 1:19 to play but a late Transy run eliminated the Lions from the tournament.
The game opened with a quick spurt for the Mount, racing out to a 9-4 lead at the 6:48 to play. Transy answered with a 12-2 run to take a five point lead of their own with 2:47 to play in the first. In the end the Pioneers would carry an 18-14 lead into the first break.
In the second the Mount opened with a quick 8-2 run to take the lead back at 22-20. They would maintain the lead for most of the second quarter, but a Transy three with 1:03 to play tied the game at 27 and neither team would score over the final minute.
The third was much of the same as the teams traded baskets and the Lions maintained their lead for all but 56 seconds of the third. A jumper from Transy with 56 seconds to play gave them a 42-40 lead heading into the fourth.
To start the fourth the Pioneers pushed ahead by five in the early going, The Lions came back to tie the game at 47 with just under 5:00 to play. A three-pointer ffrom
Bella Crawford with 3:51 to play pushed them ahead 50-47. With 1:34 to play Transy took the lead back on a pair of free throws,
Morgan Jenkins answered immediately with a three pointer to push the Lions back in front with 1:19 to play. That would be the last basket of the game for the Lions, with the Pioneers closing on a 7-0 run to secure the win.
Jenkins led the way for the Lions with a team-high 14 points, she also added 7 rebounds and 7 assists in the game.
