WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team hit the road to Westerville, Ohio on Tuesday to take on the Otterbein Cardinals in a non-conference game.
The Lions opened with a run in the top of the first inning,
AJ Meyer who was inserted into the leadoff spot for the first time this season walked to open the game, and quickly stole second base. He would move to third on a groundout by
Jordan Harley and score on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Austin Buckle.
In the bottom of the first it was right-hander
Jeff Kist who toed the rubber to start the game for the Mount. In his first start of the season Kist was solid, throwing the front 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and three earend runs.
While the Lions went scoreless in the middle innings, Otterbein scored one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth. From there the relieve duo of
Carson Taulbee and
Matt Frye were nearly perfect, over three innings of work they allowed only a pair of baserunners as each surrendered only one hit.
The Lions scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to draw within striking distance. Buckle led off the inning with a single,
Brennan Martin followed with a base-hit of his own to set the table.
Ethan Mason then drove an RBI single into centerfield, and
Andrew Clements followed with an RBI groundout.
In the top of the ninth the Lions got a runner on base but were unable to ever get the tying run to the plate, falling 6-3.
UP NEXT: It will be back to HCAC play this weekend as the Lions head to take on the Hanover Panthers in a three-game series. They will play a double-header starting at 1:00 PM on Saturday and a single game at 2:00 PM on Sunday.
