CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team took down Anderson 12-6 on Saturday to avoid being swept in an HCAC series.
The Lions sent left-hander
Sam Huston to the mound to start the game and the senior was able to pitch around danger and limit damage to keep his team in the game. Through 4.0 innings he allowed 7 hits, and 4 runs while striking out five.
Each team threatened in the first but neither scored, both teams had big outbursts in the second though. Anderson jumped ahead with a four spot in the top of the second, but the Lions answered immediately.
Andrew Clements was hit-by-pitch to start the inning,
Jackson Gutzwiller then doubled to right center field. Freshman
Zac Clow, who had been in a bit of a slump, stepped to the plate and drilled his first-career homerun to left center to get the Lions on the board.
The Mount would add two more in the bottom of the third inning to take their first lead in the series.
Austin Buckle led off with a single up the middle and
Brennan Martin followed with a single of his own which moved Buckle to third.
Ethan Mason then popped out to short left center and Buckle raced home to tie the game at four.
Andrew Clements doubled to move Martin to third and he would score on an RBI groundout by
Jackson Gutzwiller.
They would get an insurance run in the fourth,
AJ Meyer led off with a walk and
Jack Robinson followed with a single to move Meyer to third. An out later Buckle grounded out to second to score Meyer from third.
With the Mount leading 6-4, Anderson scored once in the top of the fifth inning to draw withing one. The Mount then exploded for six in the bottom of the inning to put the game away. A pair of walks sandwiched around an infield single loaded the bases with no outs. Meyer then drew a bases loaded walk, and Robinson followed by being hit-by-pitch.
Jordan Harley then delived the big blow a two-run double to right center. With Harley at third the final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly from Martin.
Daniel Brayton earned the win with 3.0 innings of relief allowing only a single run. He was followed by an inning from a perfect inning from
Carson Taulbee who struck out two and
Matt Frye finished it off by pitching the ninth.
