Baseball Walks Off vs. Heidelberg

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team hosted the Heidelberg Student Princes on Tuesday at Midland Field in a non-conference game. The Lions jumped out to a lead, but after Heidelberg came back to tie the game in the ninth inning, the Lions secured the walk-off win in the bottom of the inning.

The Lions sent right-hander Josh Issacs to the mound to start the game, he threw the front 3.0 innings allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six.

Heidelberg threatened in the top of the first inning, as the first two batters reached base. Issacs bounced back to strike out the next two but a walk loaded the bases with two outs. On a full count Josh was able to secure another strikeout to leave the bases loaded.

The Mount got one in the bottom of the first, Austin Buckle drew a one-out walk and quickly stole second base. He would score on a seeing eye RBI single up the middle from Brennan Martin

Following a scoreless second inning from both teams, Heidelberg took the lead with two in the top of the third. In the fourth Zach deSylva took over on the mound and he was excellent in three innings of work, allowing three hits and keeping the Student Princes off the scoreboard.

The Lions answered with four in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 5-2. They did so with only a single hit in the inning and it came from Ethan Mason who laced a leadoff single into right center. Andrew Clements followed with a hit-by-pitch and Zac Clow walked to load the bases with no outs. AJ Meyer put together a great at-bat fouling off some tough pitches to draw a walk to drive in Mason. Will Record followed with a sacrifice fly into left to score the second. Luke LeGault and Jordan Harley followed with walks, with Harley's pushing across the third run of the inning. The final run of the frame came on an RBI groundout from Buckle.

Heidelberg drew within one with two in the seventh coming off of reliever Jeff Kist. They would go to the ninth trailing by one, but would tie the game against Lions closer Matt Frye. Frye would earn the win though as the Lions scored in the bottom of the ninth to secure the walkoff win. With one out in the inning Sean Moore was called on to pinch hit and he beat out an infield single, he was lifted for pinch runner Nicholas Price. Harley followed with a walk and Buckle finished it off with an RBI basehit into right field to secure the win for the Mount.

UP NEXT: The Lions will be on the road at Rose-Hulman this weekend for a three-game HCAC series.
