Baseball Finishes Season with Double-Header Split vs. Earlham

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team squared of with the Earlham Quakers from Midland Field in their final double-header of the season on Saturday. The Lions would split the double-header with the Quakers who won a share of HCAC regular season championship. 

The Mount recognized their 2026 senior class in a ceremony between games. The nine seniors recognized were Andrew Clements, Devin Perry, Nicholas Price, Sam Huston, Daniel Brayton, Jordan Harley, Ethan Mason and Brennan Martin

GAME ONE | Earlham 8 - MSJ 5

Earlham got the scoring started in the top of the first inning scoring twice off of Lions starter Nolan Miller, helped in large part due to an error. With the bases loaded and only one out in the inning, Miller buckled down and got a pair of strikeouts to leave the bases full. 

The Lions got one back in the bottom of the first, Will Record doubled with one-out and would score on an RBI basehit from Jordan Harley.=

After the Quakers scored one in the top of the second the Lions came back to tie the game at three with two in the bottom of the inning. Austin Buckle led off with a basehit and moved to third on a basehit for Martin. Jackson Bucks then lifted an sacrifice fly in to centerfield. Michael Samano singled past the third baseman and AJ Meyer bunted for a basehit to load the bases, Record drove in the second run of the inning with a sac fly. 

Earlham added one in the fourth, another in the fifth and three in the seventh to take control of the game. The Lions scored once in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth, but over the two innings they left five runners on base. They once again threatened in the ninth, getting the tying run to the plate with two outs but were unable to finish the comeback.

GAME TWO |  MSJ 9 - Earlham 2

In game two the Lions sent junior right hander Josh Issacs to the mound to start the game and he was outstanding. He threw the front 6.0 innings allowing only one run and six hits while striking out four, earning his third win of the season. 

Earlham sent their ace Cayman Huntsman to the mound to start the game, and the Lions gave him a rude welcome. He pitched only a single inning allowing three hits and two runs and needing 43 pitches to get three outs. Meyer led of tthe game with a basehit but was erased on a stolen base attempt. Record and Harley both worked full count walks, Martin drilled a two out RBI single and Buckle followed with one of his own. 

The would add one more in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a Quaker error to add to their lead. They would add one more in the fifth and another in seventh to take a 5-1 lead into the eighth. The Quaker scored once in the eighth , but Carson Taulbee was able to strand the bases loaded. 

The Mount would add four in the bottom of the inning to put the game away. Samano led off with a basehit and Meyer followed with a bunt hit. On the bunt the Quaker catcher threw the ball wide of first and Samano came all the way around to score the first run of the inning. Ethan Mason, Buckle and Kaden Snodgrass all delivered RBIs in the inning.

 Matt Frye came on to pitch the ninth and retired the Quakers to secure the win.
