CINCINNATI, OHIO — The Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team, under the new leadership of Coach Marc Sabin, dominated its season opener Tuesday night at Schueler Field, defeating Bethany College 5-1 and giving Coach Sabin his first career victory!
The Lions dominated the match from start to finish, outshooting the Bison 27-3. The Mount also had 11 corner kicks to Bethany's zero. In the 21st minute, Mary Anhofer scored the Lions' first goal of the season. Four minutes later, Kendal Fox sent a cross toward the middle of the box, where Maya Cracchilo scored to make it 2-0. Less than three minutes later, Gabrielle Egan found the back of the net, assisted by Cracchilo, giving the Mount a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the 58th minute, Macie Starr scored her first career goal as a Lion, extending the lead to 4-0. Two minutes later, the Bison scored to cut into the Mount's lead, making it 4-1. Less than two minutes later, Payge Callahan found the back of the net with a header off a pass from Starr, extending the lead to 5-1.
The Lion defense played outstanding, allowing only two shots on goal.
UP NEXT: The Mount will travel to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where they will take on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday, September 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
