Dr. Robert Burger is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio where he graduated from LaSalle High School and went on to attend Notre Dame University on an academic scholarship. While attending Notre Dame, Dr. Burger played varsity football and was a member of the 1977 National Championship Team. His honors included First Team academic All-American, National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete and the Dolly Cohen awards as the top scholar athlete in the country. Dr. Burger completed is bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (1981) and then attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati (1985). Dr. Burger completed his internship in surgery (1985-86) and residency in orthopaedic surgery (1986-90) at the University of Cincinnati. He also completed a fellowship at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. Dr. Burger has a special interest in knee and shoulder injuries and is actively involved in education and clinical research in these areas.
In addition to his role at the Mount, Dr. Burger is also the Medical Director, Head Team Physician at Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH; Orthopaedic Consultant/Team Physician for the Cincinnati Reds; Team Physician for LaSalle High School; and, Team Physician for the Cincinnati Steam.
Dr. Burger is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has professional affiliations with the: American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Notre Dame Orthopaedic Society, Hughston Society, American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, and Cincinnati Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Burger has been granted the following professional honors: Academic All-American Hall of Fame by the College Sports Information Directors of America, 2006; Outstanding Team Physician, by the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association, 2009; Outstanding Team Physician, by the Ohio Joint Advisory Commission on Sports Medicine, 2010; Cincinnati Magazine “Top Doctors”, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2010, 2011. Dr. Burger has held, or current holds, the following leadership positions: Founding Member and Past President, Beacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, 2004-2009; Section Head, Orthopaedic Surgery, Good Samaritan Hospital, 2005-present; Director of Quality Assurance, Orthopaedic Surgery, Good Samaritan Hospital, 1997-present; Executive Committee, Good Samaritan Hospital, 1999-2008; Executive Committee, Beacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, 1997-present.
