John Spinney

John Spinney returns for his 6th season as the head Women's Volleyball coach for the 2024-25 school year.

The Lions have become a perennial contender for the HCAC Championship during Spinney's tenure, and captured the 2023 HCAC regular season championship.They put together a 24-3 overall record and a perfect 9-0 record in the HCAC, earning the opportunity to host the 2023 HCAC Tournment where they fell to Transylvania in the finals. Despite the loss the Lions earned an at-large berth into the NCAA D-III National Tournament.

During his Lions tenure Coach Spinney has put together a 92-36 record. Overall in his career he has a record of 480-176 going into the 2024-25 season.

In 2020 Spinney led the Lions to a 13-5 record overall and a 7-2 conference record. Spinney led the Lions to a national ranking of #13 last season where they squared off with #3 Transylvania in the HCAC Championship but fell short. In his 2 years Spinney has a 27-17 overall record and a 10-8 conference record.

Spinney was the President's Athletic Conference Coach of the Year six times. He also was named the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year finalist in 2018. Spinney coached the National Freshman of the Year (Emily Mohs) in 2018 and has coached a total of 16 All-Region athletes, 4 All-Americans and 2 Co-SIDA Academic All-Americans. Spinney has also coached players on his club teams who have went on to play in the Big 10, SEC, Pac-12, ACC, Big 12 and 2 who have made it to the USA National Team. Spinney is also a member of Fairfield University's Hall of Fame 1998 volleyball team which ended with a record of 35-2. 

Spinney began his collegiate coaching career at The Mount in 1993 as an assistant coach under Mary Ann Broderick. In 1994 Spinney served as interim head coach, leading the Lions to a program record 37 win and an appearance in the NAIA Regional Championship.

The following year he returned to his post as assistant coach, which he remained in until leaving for Division I Fairfield University in 1997. He would spend only one year at Fairfield, despite helping the Stags to a 35-2 record, a birth in the NCAA Tournament and the staff garnering Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference staff of the year honors.

After which he returned to The Mount, and over the next two seasons the Lions had record of 66-10 and appeared in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals during both seasons. Overall during his six seasons as an assistant at The Mount the Lions had a record of 204-76. 

Coach Spinney, is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and has coached numerous Cincinnati area club volleyball teams to national tournaments, including Sports Express, Team Z, Cincy Classics and NKYVC. He also spent time as the training director for both the Cincy Classics and NKYVC.
