Visiting Rose-Hulman Institute of Technollogy used a ball control offense and a defense that forced four Mount turnovers as they upended the Lions on Homecoming 2010 today, 13-7. The Mount, 3-3 overall, 2-3 in the HCAC, will resume action on Oct. 23 when they play at HCAC-rival Earlham College. The loss to Rose-Hulman was just the second for the Lions in nine career match-up between the two teams.
After the Lions went three plays and out on their first possession of the game, the Fightin' Engineers took the ball at their own 44-yard line and scored the game's first points when they ran off 10 plays in just less than four minutes - all rushing plays. They built their lead to 10-0 after a 23-yard field goal with 5:50 to play in the first half. The Mount then got on the scoreboard on their next possession when back-up quarterback Brian Pitzer (South Salem, OH/McClain) led a five play, 65-yard scoring drive by scoring on a 22-yard run. Brian Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) converted the PAT kick to cut the deficit to 10-7. Rose-Hulman answered that score with a 22-yard field goal just before the half to take a 13-7 lead at the intermission.
The Lions were hurt in the first half by losing two fumbles, as Rose-Hulman controlled the clock. The Fightin' Engineers had possesion of the ball for just over 13 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, as well, and the Mount had two additional turnovers in the fourth quarter, one on an interception and one on a fumble, thwarting any opportunity to tie the game or take the lead in the game.
Rose-Hulman rolled up 250 yards on the ground, with two players going over 100 yards each. Pitzer led the Mount with 96 yards rushing, but he and starter Tyler Feine (Amelia, OH/Amelia) combined to go just seven-of-19 for 62 yards and a interception passing in place of injured starter Chris Howland (Loveland, OH/Loveland), who did not play. Three different receivers led the Mount with two receptions each.
RHIT was held to four-of-12 passing for 38 yards, but held a 16-14 edge in first downs, 288-216 edge in total yards and 40:18-19:42 advantage in time of possession.
Erik Prosser (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had a game-high 12 tackles while Rob Fox (Harrison, OH/Colerain) and Brett Hambrick (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) had nine tackles each.
