Visiting Bluffton University recorded a doubleheader sweep on Saturday over the Lions, winning 10-5 and 7-6. The Mount, 2-13 overall, 0-2 in the HCAC, will be back in action on Mar. 30 when they play an HCAC doubleheader at Hanover College.
The Mount jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one, thanks to RBI singles by Casey Brookbank (Cincinnati, OH/Deer Park) and Kathleen Horn (Florence, KY/Boone County). Bluffton, however, would grab the lead in the third inning, 4-3, and add five more runs in the fifth to forge ahead, 9-3. The Lions scored two more runs in the fifth but would get no closer. Tanya Sefton (Vevay, IN/Switzerland County) had three hits to lead the offense while Brookbank chipped in two hits. Megan McCullough (Middletown, OH/Middletown) scored two runs for the Mount. Katie Cohill (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), who was tagged with the loss, and Brookbank, pitched for the Lions.
The Lions also led in game two, 4-1 after two innings, and 6-1 after three innings of play, but allowed three runs in the seventh as they dropped the game. Brookbank clouted a grand slam in the second inning for the Mount, while teammates Kimberly McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) and Horn had two hits each. McCullough and Horn had doubles while Abby LaRosa (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy) hit a triple. Horn also scored twice. McElhinny suffered the loss for the Lions, pitching a complete game for the Mount and allowing only three hits and three earned runs.
