Lions' softball team suffers HCAC doubleheader setback to Transylvania University

The Mount began 2012 HCAC play today at Transylvania University, losing a doubleheader to the Pioneers, 4-2 and 9-1 in five innings. The Lions, 1-10 overall, 0-2 in the conference this season, return to action on Mar. 25 with an HCAC doubleheader at Franklin College.

Transy jumped out to a a 2-0 lead in game one after their first at-bat, but the Mount rebounded to knot the score at two-all in the second inning, with one run scoring on an error and another run coming in on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Moore (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest). The Pioneers would push across single runs in the fourth and sixth innings as they held the Lions scoreless the rest of the game. Both teams recorded four hits each, as the Lions were led by Kimberly McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County), who had two hits. Moore had a double in the game. Taylor McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) started on the mound for the Lions, pitching five innings and allowing four hits, four runs, nine walks and recording one strikeout. The loss was the Mount's seven of the season by two runs or less.

The Pioneers scored early and often in game two, scoring three times in the first inning and adding two runs in each of the second and third innings en route to the doubleheader sweep. Four Mount pitchers saw action in the game, with Kimberly McElhinny taking the loss after pitching two innings. The Lions also committed four errors in the game, and totaled four hits.
