The Lions slipped down another notch in the HCAC standings after losing a conference road doubleheader today at Defiance College, 5-1 and 5-4. The Mount, 5-24 overall, is now 4-8 in the HCAC and in seventh place. They are scheduled to resume play on Apr. 18 when they play a non-conference twinbill at Centre College.
Defiance jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one, only to see the Lions knot the score at one-all in the third inning on an RBI single by Tanya Sefton (Vevay, IN/Switzerland County). That would be all the scoring the Mount would muster against Defiance pitching, as the Yellow Jackets plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Lions went out in order in the seventh, as Danielle Hausfeld (Wilder, KY/Newport Central Catholic) pitched a complete game for the Mount, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, one walk and recording one strikeout. Hausfeld fell to 0-3 with the loss. Sefton led the Mount with two hits, as the Lions were held to five hits in the game.
Defiance scored three times in the first inning of game two, and led 4-0 after the second inning only to see the Lions bounce back and score three times in the third inning. Sefton stole home for one run while Taylor McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) and teammate Lindsay Griffith (Alexandria, KY/Bishop Brossart) had run-scoring singles. The Lions tied the game at four-all in the fifth inning when Ashley Moore (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) doubled in Kim McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County). The Mount would end that inning stranding two runners, and would strand another runner in the sixth inning. Defiance forged ahead 5-4 in the sixth inning off Hausfeld, who relieved, plating the winning run on a wild pitch. The Lions stranded the tying run on third base, and the potential go ahead run on second base, to end the game. The Mount out-hit the Yellow Jackets, 10-7, but left 10 runners on base.
Both McElhinny's recorded two hits each while Moore also had two hits in game two. Mallory Wright (Germantown, OH/Valley View) had a double in the nitecap.
