Host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, behind an efficient offense and stalwart defense, jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter on Saturday, en route to a 34-0 shutout over the Mount. The loss drops the Lions to 5-3 overall, 5-2 in the HCAC, while Rose-Hulman goes to 5-3 overall, 5-1 in the conference. Franklin College continues to lead the HCAC with a 6-0 conference mark. The Mount will host Senior Day on Nov. 9 when they take on Earlham College (2-6, 1-5 HCAC).
The Lions were hurt by mistakes in the first half against the Fightin' Engineers, turning the ball over three times in the first 30 minutes of action - two on interceptions and one on a fumble. They also lost the ball twice on downs and punted twice, with their longest drive of the first half going for 55 yards. Rose-Hulman, meanwhile, capitalized on the errors, scoring on two short TD runs and a a seven-yard TD pass, scoring three times in the first quarter. Two more TD throws in the second quarter by the Fightin' Engineers would end the scoring in the game, and give the team a 34-0 lead at the intermission. The Lions had the ball for just five possessions in the second half, but could not dent the scoreboard.
The Lions held an edge in first downs, 21-18, but Rose-Hulman had a 384-273 advantage in total yards. The Lions had five fimbles, losing two, and two interceptions in the game, while the Fightin' Engineers did not suffer any turnovers. Rose-Hulman was eight-for-16 on third down to the Mount's four-of-17 conversions on third down. Rose-Hulman also had a 6-2 edge in sacks.
Mike Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Taft) was 16-of-31 passing for 168 yards. Leonard Riston (Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) had a game-high eight receptions for 77 yards while John Peters (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) had five catches for 82 yards. Charles McCall (Miami, FL/Miami Norland) led the Lions' rushing attack with 36 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. Garrett Breiner (Louisville, KY/Male) paced the defense with a game-high 11 tackles.
