Lions' football team registers a 63-14 Homecoming win over Anderson University

The Mount St. Joseph University football squad turned in a solid offensive and defensive performance on Saturday afternoon, as they rolled to a 63-14 win on Homecoming 2014 against the Anderson University Ravens. The Mount, 6-2 overall, 5-1 in the HCAC; remains 1/2 game behind HCAC-leader Franklin College in the conference standings, and will return to action on Nov. 1 at Bluffton University. Anderson falls to 2-5, 2-3 with the loss.

Denzel Norvel (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall) got the scoring started in the game for the Lions, scoring on a 56-yard dash just 35 seconds into the game. Anderson knotted the score at seven-all on a three-yard QB run at 9:54, but the Ravens would never be in the game after that point, as the Mount added four unanswered TDs before the half, to post a 35-7 advantage at the intermission. Leonard Riston (Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) helped lead the offensive barrage by the Lions, scoring TDs on two pass plays from quarterback Greg Simpson (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore). Anderson gained less than 100 yards of offense in the first half, turning the ball over on downs with five punts, two interceptions and a fumble.

Charles McCall (Miami, FL/Miami Norland) added two, third quarter TD runs, giving the Mount a 49-7 lead. With the Lions' substiuting freely in the second half, Anderson scored on a pass play at 10:25 of the fourth quarter. The Mount, however, would add two more score following that, with De'Marco Thomas (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) scoring on a 21-yard TD dash and Zach Hubbard (Cincinnati, OH/Fairfield) returning an interception 48 yards for a score.

The Mount had 24 first downs to Anderson's 17, rolled up 532 yards of total offense while holding Anderson to 265 yards of offense, and intercepted four passes while holding the Ravens to 11-for-25 passing. McCall had a game-high 115 yards rushing and three TDs, while Norvell added 88 yards rushing. Simpson completed 10-of-23 passes for 135 yards and two TDs, and ran for 99 yards. Riston and teammate Ronnell Colbert (Louisville, KY/Doss) each hauled in four receptions. Brent McCleerey (Mooresville, IN/Monrovia) and Konnor Blevins (Cincinnati, OH/Lakota West) each had six tackles. Jonathan Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) added a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
