The Lions and Yellow Jackets were involved on two low-scoring games today at Defiance College, with the home team winning the first game 1-0 and the Mount taking the night-cap, by a 3-1 score. The Mount is now 4-14 overall, 2-4 in the HCAC and will return to action on April 13 when they host an HCAC doubleheader against Manchester College.
Defiance College scored the lone run of the first game in the first inning. The Yellow Jackets got the leadoff runner on with a hit, and the next batter reached on an error, putting runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners over while the inning's fourth batter drove in the run from third base with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Lions were held to two hits, and two walks in the game. Mallory Wright (Germantown, OH/Valley View) recorded a bunt single in the first inning while teammate Makayla McClurg (Aurora, IN/South Dearborn) had a single in the sixth inning. The Mount stranded four runners on base in the game, including leaving a runner on base in three of the final four innings. Ashley Moore (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) suffered tough-luck pitching loss, tossing a complete game (six innings), allowing five hits, one unearned run, with one strikeout.
In game two of the twin-bill, all the runs in the game were scored in the second and third innings. The Mount jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their half of the second, when Moore plated Pam Wisniewski (Florence, KY/Boone County) with an RBI single. Defiance tied the game at 1-all in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double off Lions' pitcher Megan James (Villa Hills, KY/Dixie Heights). The Mount then scored the go-ahead, and eventual winning winning runs in the third. Becky Owens (Cincinnati, OH/Dater) ripped a two-run double, scoring Morgan Kain (Batesville, IN/Batesville) and Owens, giving her team a 3-1 advantage. James shutdown the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way, garnering her first win of the season. She pitched seven innings, allowed five hits and one run. The Mount pounded out eight hits, with Kain leading the way with two hits. Alli Lenos (Middletown, OH/Madison), Owens and Wisniewski had doubles for the Lions.
