Mount St. Joseph University rolled out nearly 500 yards of total offense, and grabbed a 31-12 lead at the half on Saturday, en route to a 58-25 win against Augustana College in the Knowlton Football Classic. The Lions, who fell last season to the Vikings, 20-10, will take their 1-0 record into their Sept. 13 home game against Millsaps College.
On the Lions first possession of the game, they rambled down the field in six plays and 75 yards, scoring the game's first points when Denzel Norvell (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall) raced in from 17 yards out. Shane Kelly (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) added the PAT to give the Mount a 7-0 lead. Kelly added a 19 yard field goal at 4:30 of the first half to push his team's lead out to 10-0. The Vkings got on the scoreboard on their next possession, taking the ball 65 yards on 5 five plays in just under two minutes. Their PAT was blocked, making the score 10-6. Greg Simpson (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) connected with wideout John Peters (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) on a 26-yard scoring play with 49 seconds to play in the opening quarter, and Kelly connected on the PAT, giving the Mount a 17-6 advantage.
The Mount got TDs from Mike Williams (Cincinnati, OH/Taft), on a two yard run, and Charles McCall (Miami, FL/Miami Norland), in a 10 yard TD reception from Simpson, in the second half and held a 19 point lead at the intermission. The Lions had 345 yards of offense in the first half, including 196 yards on the ground. Augustana was held to just one-of-seven third down conversions.
Ronnell Colbert (Louisville, KY/Doss) recorded a 17-yard TD reception from Williams in the third quarter, giving the Lions a 37-15 lead. Leonard Riston (Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) grabbed a four-yard TD pass from Simpson in the fourth quarter, and the Lions defense added two mid-fourth quarter scores, on a 55 yard fumble recovery and an 18-yard interception return to end their scoring.
Norvell finished with 125 yards rushing while Simpson and Williams combined to go 20-for-25 passing for 235 yards and four TDs. Norvell and Riston had five receptions each. Brent McCleerey (Mooresville, IN/Monrovia) led the defense with eight tackles, including a fumble recovery TD.
