Lions' softball team records a home doubleheader sweep over Berea College

The Mount St. Joseph University softball team improved to 10-4 on the season on Tuesday evening after sweeping a home doubleheader against Berea College, 12-1 in five innings, and 5-4 in eight innings. The Lions are scheduled to return to action on April 4 when they play a doubleheader at HCAC-foe Manchester University.

The Lions plated four runs in the first inning of game one, and took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth when they blew the game open and ended it early due to the run-rule. The Mount pounded out 13 hits in the game one victory, with five different players connecting for two hits each. Danielle Nichelson (Glencoe, KY/Gallatin County), who had three RBI, picked up the her sixth of the season. She allowed only three hits, a walk and an unearned run while striking out five batters. She also had a home run in the game.

Berea led by a 2-0 margin in game two after their at-bat in the second inning, only to see the Lions put up three runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the third inning to grab the lead. The Mount pushed their lead to 4-2 by the fifth inning but Berea knotted the score at four-all in the sixth inning with a two-run home run. The Lions held Berea off the scoreboard in the eighth inning, while the Lions loaded the bases with one out and scored the game-winning run off a Berea error. Paige Kiesewetter (Piqua, OH/Miami East) went the distance for the Mount, recorded her fourth win of the season. She allowed five hits and a walk and had five Ks. Paige Norton (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) and Morgan Hoehn (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) had the Lions' two hits in the game.
